Advanced Neuromuscular Therapy

Neuromuscular therapy is a series of soft tissue manipulation treatment protocols based on the practitioner’s skill, anatomy knowledge, and precise palpatory application. Developed in the 1930’s by Dr. Stanley Lief in England, it uses a holistic approach towards healing. This modality is based on neurological laws that explain how the central nervous system initiates and maintains pain, while emphasizing and stimulating the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Neuromuscular therapy accelerates the overall healing process by re-educating the link between the muscles and the nervous system, enhancing the function of joints and muscles, and facilitating the release of endorphins. The outcome of this therapy is to help relieve pain and dysfunction by alleviating the underlying cause.

Trigger Point Therapy

Trigger Point Therapy is a modality based on Dr. Janet Travell’s research which focuses on stimulating and releasing latent, active, and satellite “trigger points” in your body. Trigger points are tender adhesions which elicit a reproducible pain referral pattern opon palpation. These “knots” typically occur in the musculotendinous junctions or muscle bellies and are built up throughout a person’s life due to repetitive motions, physical, mental, and/or emotional stress. During a session, focused pressure is applied through a variety of techniques order to release your trigger points, then activating and perpetuating factors are identified to avoid recreating the same adhesions. This process can be slightly painful at times, yet the effects are lasting and profoundly transformative.

Chair Massage

Chair massage is a popular way of relieving stress and releasing tension right in your home or workplace. You receive your session in a specialized ergonomic chair which I bring to your location. In addition to the usual health benefits, another benefit of chair massage is that it is done over the clothing. With seated massage, you can avoid the discomfort and awkwardness that some may feel in disrobing for a traditional massage. Also, chair massage sessions are usually shorter than traditional massage, making it convenient enough to fit into your busy schedule.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep Tissue Massage is a form of bodywork that aims to relieve chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep pressure on the contracted areas, either following or going across the grain of muscles, tendons, and fascia. Deep Tissue Massage is ideal for athletes and highly effective for releasing stress areas due to misalignment, repetitive motions, and past lingering injuries. Due to the nature of the deep tissue work, open communication during the session is crucial to avoid unnecessary discomfort. While this therapy is not meant to hurt, soreness is relatively common after the treatment, and plenty of water should be ingested to aid with the flushing and removal of toxins released during the session.

Geriatric Massage

Geriatric massage is a form of massage designed to meet the specific needs of the elderly. It helps to improve blood circulation, relieve pain, and also increase range of motion. If you are elderly, geriatric massage can help you maintain and improve your overall health, as well as regain certain physical functions that have been reduced due to aging. In addition, since the elderly don’t typically receive enough physical touch, this massage can also help alleviate symptoms of loneliness or depression.

Hot Stone Therapy

Hot Stone Therapy is a style of massage where heated stones are used dynamically and stationary, placed at specific sites on your body to deepen relaxation and promote circulation in your muscles. Lomi Lomi

Lomi Lomi is the Hawaiian word for “massage”, and it is part of a larger native Hawaiian tradition of healing and natural body care. I learned through my “kumu” (teacher) in Maui that all living beings are seeking a state of “ho’oponopono” (right balance) through love, gratitude, compassion, and forgiveness. During a Lomi Lomi session I begin with a traditional Hawaiian “pule” (prayer) chant and “malama” (care for) your body through a deep rythmic flow, mimicing the rolling ocean waves. I skillfully address the muscles, tendons, and ligaments as well as the bones lying deep within, while reviving your spirit and filling your body with the “pono” (righteous) energy of love. If this modality appeals to you, ask me about 4-handed Lomi Lomi!

Myofascial Release

Myofascial release is a form of soft tissue therapy intended to eliminate pain, increase range of motion, and rebalance the entire body. It does this by using massage techniques to stretch the fascia and release the bonds that exist between the fascia, muscles and bones. Fascia is the connective tissue that connects and covers all muscles, organs, and skeletal structures of the body. Direct myofascial release is sometimes known as deep tissue work. Indirect release applies light pressure and gently stretches the fascia; this allows for increased blood circulation and relief from pain.

Pediatric Massage

Children experience many of the same ailments that plague us adults, yet they are traditionally much less likely to receive professional therapeutic massage. For this reason I teamed up with Tina Allen, pioneer of the pediatric massage therapy movement and founder of the Liddle Kidz Foundation. I am now educated and certified in pediatric massage including children with special needs as well as oncology/ palliative care. Children’s bodies are significantly different than those of adults, and they require safe nurturing touch just as much if not more than we do. If you know a kiddo in need of a session, please contact me to discuss eligibility and requirements for this special form of massage therapy.

Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a Japanese form of massage therapy derived from Traditional Chinese Medicine. The word Shiatsu comes from two Japanese words – “shi” (finger) and “atsu” (pressure). In addition to the direct stimulation of pressure points along the meridians (energy pathways), gentle stretching techniques are applied to integrate the point work and encourage the flow of Chi (energy) throughout the body. Shiatsu is traditionally done over clothing on a floor mat or low-laying table, and is revered as a meditative healing art that honors the body, mind and spirit.
